IMPAC Medical Systems, Inc. is pleased
to present Cancer Website Evaluation Guidelines for
Patients in downloadable .pdf format. Healthcare providers are
free to distribute this to their patients so long as it is not
altered in any way. The information and advice published in or made
available through this article is not intended to replace the
services of a trained health professional or to be a substitute for
medical advice of physicians or oncologists.
These guidelines are being provided by IMPAC as a public service,
and were written by Joel Goldwein, MD, IMPAC's Vice President of
Medical Affairs. Dr. Goldwein is a founder of OncoLink (www.oncolink.upenn.edu),
one of the first and most prestigious Web-based cancer information
resources. He served as a Chief Editor of OncoLink for 7 years. Dr.
Goldwein is a former Professor of Radiation Oncology at the
University of Pennsylvania where he also directed the Clinical
Pediatric Radiation Oncology program as well as the Residency
Training program.
The Cancer Website Evaluation Guidelines were written in response to
the demand by cancer patients for quality information about their
disease compounded by the increasing difficulty in gleaning this
information from the thousands of online resources. Evaluating a
website is a challenge, and these guidelines are intended to assist
your patients through the evaluation process so that they can be
more selective about the resources they are exploring.
Most oncologists are appreciative of well-informed patients, and
believe that they have good relationships with them. We hope that
the Cancer Website Evaluation Guidelines for Patients will
help foster that relationship, will improve the time you spend with
your patients, and will help your patients develop the best possible
understanding of their disease.
