Salinas Radiation Oncology Medical Center (SRO), one of eight
facilities that make up Coastal Radiation Oncology Medical
Center in Northern California, is built on a tradition of
compassionate care and technological leadership with the most
advanced IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy) systems
available. Using the IMPAC oncology management system interfaced
with the Siemens ONCOR™ and COHERENCE™, SRO treats approximately
25 patients per day.
The IMPAC system is used throughout the Salinas department by
the front office staff to register patients and schedule
appointments for the physicians. The newest machine at Salinas
is the Siemens ONCOR with COHERENCE. “We create the treatment
plans and import them into the IMPAC system. Our therapists like
using the IMPAC treatment calendar to schedule treatment fields
so the fields autosequence on the machine,” says dosimetrist
Mike Hanner.
“IMPAC allows us to view the images taken on the portal imager
and review them right from our offices – all necessary portal
information is right there in the system so we don't have to
search for it before treating the patient,” adds Hanner. “And we
make great use of the quality checklist feature where we track
the patient's progress from simulation, through the treatment
planning process right up to the commencement of treatment.”
Jacob Philip, IMPAC’s director of radiation oncology explains
“This interface success demonstrates the benefits of having the
flexibility to select workflow solutions that are most
appropriate to the circumstances at each cancer center. IMPAC
has always believed in the fundamentals of customer choice and
best-of-breed as crucial to not just its success but also to the
greatest benefit of the patients who receive care.
“Interfacing the IMPAC system with the COHERENCE workspace
enables us to have a single environment to access and manage
clinical information,” adds chief physicist Joe Wong, who
divides his time between the Coastal sites. “It has been
especially beneficial to us since we have satellite offices that
access treatment information for our patients.” |
