IMPAC’s comprehensive, integrated software system streamlines
scheduling, billing, reporting, charting, and imaging in
oncology centers around the world; but for one unique practice,
Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers (RMCC), IMPAC is fundamental to
their success. The largest provider of cancer care services in
Colorado, RMCC relies upon IMPAC to manage five free-standing
cancer centers, the Rocky Mountain PET Institute, and a
centralized business office. RMCC’s radiation oncology programs
provide state-of-the-art cancer treatment including intensity
modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), stereotactic radiosurgery
(SRS), and stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT).
RMCC’s physicians located at five cancer centers are united by
the IMPAC system running off a single server, enabling a
physician in Colorado Springs, to view images and electronic
records of a patient being treated in Littleton. According to
Lisa Bruehahn, radiation and imaging services director for RMCC,
“We have become a ‘trendsetter’ in the oncology community, by
implementing the most state-of-the-art therapies, with the most
advanced technology available.” By fully utilizing IMPAC’s wide
range of technological tools, RMCC is one of only a few cancer
centers to become virtually “filmless” and “paperless.” Bruehahn
believes that Kodak’s ACR-2000i digital portal imaging system
and IMPAC’s electronic medical record (EMR) have not only
increased efficiency in the practice, but also decreased
expenses on film and storage. IMPAC’s ViewStation allows
physicians to monitor patient images from any location, reducing
the time spent “searching” for films, further increasing
efficiency within the practice.
RMCC, a fully owned subsidiary of US Oncology, is a
community-based network of 50 private practice hematology,
medical oncology, and radiation oncology physicians. The group
currently treats patients in 19 clinics throughout the Front
Range and mountain communities of Colorado. RMCC treats more
than 60 percent of the cancer patients in Colorado, and its
physicians are actively involved in leading research in more
than 90 nationwide clinical trials. RMCC has “raised the bar”
for area hospitals by implementing the highest technology with
optimal comprehensive patient care in a freestanding setting.
They may well serve as a model for the future of cancer care in
the United States.
