Austin Health has
an international reputation for
innovation, and it supports that
reputation by investing in
technology that will benefit both
patients and clinical staff. The
radiation oncology team had operated
with a system that had been in
clinical use since 1992 prior to
upgrading to the MOSAIQ oncology
management system.
“What a difference the MOSAIQ system
has made in our operations,” says
Dominic Au-Yeung, Manager of
Radiation Oncology at Austin. “It
has enabled our department to go
fully electronic in managing all
aspects of patient information.”
The MOSAIQ system was purchased in
conjunction with the hospital’s new
Elekta Synergy® linear accelerator
to replace an Elekta Precise™ linear
accelerator. Austin Health’s
Radiation Oncology Department is
part of a comprehensive cancer
service at Austin Health in
Melbourne and is associated with the
Ludwig Institute for Cancer
Research.
Treatment capacity will be increased
with the opening of the new Olivia
Newton John Cancer Centre at the
Austin Hospital, so the ability to
scale the IMPAC solution was
critical to the long-term success of
the department.
This ability to easily support a
sharp increase in patient volume was
just one reason for the selection of
MOSAIQ. Other reasons, which support
best practices in radiation
oncology, included:
- Increase efficiency with the improved
workflow of an internal paperless system
- Care Plan options improve the quality of
service to patients
- Support for evidence-based practice for
oncology (for example, users can implement the Clinical
Toxicity Chart as a clinical reporting process to document
and track how patients respond to treatment)
- Complete package for oncology practice,
including patient scheduling, clinical data and activities
reporting, staff resource scheduling, clinical notes
management, planning and treatment, and more
Au-Yeung praises the team at IMPAC for the
smooth system installation. IMPAC provided an onsite
software specialist to perform the installation outside of
standard clinic hours, allowing patient treatments to
continue uninterrupted.
What does the future hold for Austin Health?
- More licenses will be acquired when
the department is relocated to a new site and services
are expanded
- Integration of 2D and 3D imaging as
tools are developed
- Analysis of volumes acquired online
and delivered dosimetry will be compared with planned
data
