Coping with Challenges
Princess Margaret Hospital is the largest radiation therapy
treatment facility under one roof in North America. It is
staffed by 30 radiation oncologists and approximately 400
patients per day are treated on its 16 linear accelerators.
Coping with such high patient throughput presents significant
challenges and in 1995, Terry Michaelson, Director of Technical
Systems, Radiation Medicine Program at Princess
Margaret, University Health Network directed the implementation a new Radiation Therapy
Management System.
Schedule Integration
The goal was to move from their “homegrown” software to a
comprehensive system that would manage all aspects of scheduling
and provide them with the capability to fully integrate all of
their radiation treatment equipment. Michaelson noted, “The
challenges faced by Princess Margaret Hospital were the same as
those faced by many oncology centers, but on a larger scale. The
number of patients and staff to be scheduled and tracked on a
daily basis is immense. It would be hard to imagine going back
to a time without IMPAC.”
Seamless Solution
IMPAC’s oncology management system has become an integral part
of the center’s day-to-day process and in Michaelson’s view, the
IMPAC system has significantly contributed to their department’s
efficiency, “We have achieved our goal using IMPAC software for
all aspects of radiation therapy, from scheduling to image
management. If IMPAC can provide a solution to these issues at a
facility the size of Princess Margaret Hospital, then it should
be possible anywhere.” From scheduling appointments to radiation
treatment planning to paperless prescriptions, all patient data
is captured and managed electronically with the IMPAC system.
The result is an integrated management solution that improves
overall communication, process efficiency, and quality of care.
