Integration of Treatment Equipment
Princess Margaret Hospital, part of the University Health
Network, houses 16 linear accelerators under one roof in its
facility. Treating over 400 patients a day makes managing data
including medical images critical to the day-to-day processes.
Terry Michaelson, Director of Technical Systems, Radiation
Medicine Program at
Princess Margaret, University Health Network commented, “The ability to streamline systems
access and data flow is a key feature of IMPAC software. Nowhere
else in the world does one Radiation Therapy Facility manage and
integrate so much equipment from such a variety of manufacturers
(including Varian and Elekta). Our approach is to capitalize on
the best features of the different manufacturers in order to
provide the best possible treatment for our patients. IMPAC
radiation therapy management software has enabled this
integration throughout The Radiation Medicine Program.”
Streamlined Charting
IMPAC software provides access to both images and data in a
single patient record, thereby eliminating the need for
redundant systems, streamlining charting related tasks requiring
both image and data review and providing a more complete picture
of patient care. IMPAC’s comprehensive EMR supports the
integration of oncology-related medical images via the standard
DICOM image format. CTs, MRIs, simulation films, and port films
are available for immediate and simultaneous review by multiple
clinicians. IMPAC’s image review software provides tools that
allow the physician to approve, modify or reject an image and
automatically communicates changes to the therapist at the
point-of-care.
Communication Enhancement
Princess Margaret has found that use of the IMPAC system has
enhanced communication throughout the Program and has enabled
more complex treatments to be delivered on a routine basis. Mr.
Michaelson stated, “We are very pleased that IMPAC has enabled
the integration of data and images from our planning and
treatment delivery devices. IMPAC has kept up with the ‘best of
the breed’ technologies that we continue to adopt, such as
interfaces for managing the digital images from our Varian and
Elekta treatment equipment and our CT simulators.”
