MD Anderson Gets a New Image

Customer Snapshot

Transition to Filmless
MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC) treats nearly 350 patients per day on six of their treatment machines. When deciding to transition to a filmless facility MDACC embraced IMPAC’s image management system teamed with the new Kodak ACR-2000i, computed radiography system. By installing the Kodak units and implementing IMPAC to manage digital images MDACC is able to utilize cost-effective digital image review as well as efficient integration of images into the IMPAC electronic medical record (EMR). Charles Washington, administrative clinical director, notes that this type of practical innovation is necessary in a center such as MDACC and the benefits were “immediately realized.”

Increased Productivity
The Kodak ACR-2000i is faster and more efficient than conventional port films, and more cost-effective than electronic portal imagers. IMPAC automatically imports the CRs where they are managed as an integral part of the patient’s EMR. Because IMPAC stores the digital images in one place, multiple users from various stations have access to view images simultaneously. And IMPAC facilitates image review, eliminating the time spent searching for simulation and port films. The adage “time is money” is especially true in a busy radiation therapy department; less time wasted tracking down films translates into increased productivity, which translates into improved patient care.

Impressive Results
All of MDACC’s clinical service groups have embraced IMPAC, making for a very successful transition to filmless technology. Erdal Sipahi, information systems manager stated, “In order to have a successful implementation, you have to have the support of the caregivers themselves. Our staff is very excited about the technology and the changes being made because they see the value in it.” For such a large department to succeed in implementing IMPAC’s filmless technology bodes well for the product. It is the “acid test,” and the results are impressive!
