Treating in Confidence
In 1995 Gibbs Regional Cancer Center (GRCC) installed IMPAC
software with the objective of streamlining the center’s verify
and record process. Today, IMPAC’s OpenRT™ Certification Program
ensures consistent quality through open systems integration and
gives the center the confidence to routinely carry out
technically advanced treatments and significantly benefit
patient care. David Vassy, chief medical physicist at GRCC, has
been at the center for 22 years and noted the improvement
provided by IMPAC, “The IMPAC system has definitely made an
impact on the work environment in the radiation therapy
department. We are more confident in carrying out technically
difficult treatments that lead to potentially better outcomes.
Treatment Compatibility
Because IMPAC’s software is compatible with a wide range of
treatment equipment and treatment planning systems, centers
often use IMPAC in conjunction with other vendors. Vassy
explained improved integration, commenting that IMPAC provides
“prompt support” as GRCC works through integration challenges.
“What impressed us most is that IMPAC called our treatment
planning system provider, CMS directly to
work through the technical challenges of importing Digitally
Reconstructed Radiographs (DRR’s) for direct comparison with
port films. By working directly, and over modem links, they
solved the problem without us having to act as intermediaries.
Now we save our staff approximately 30 minutes and the cost of 4
or 5 sheets of film per patient. Our objective is to operate in
an almost filmless environment within the next few months. We
would not have been able to make this transition without IMPAC’s
help and support,” Vassy said.
Clinical and Administrative Benefits
In addition to verify and record, GRCC uses IMPAC’s software for
scheduling, charging, reporting and general communication
between staff. “I see many significant advantages to using the
IMPAC system. It has allowed us to carry out more complex
treatments in a safer and more efficient environment,” stated
Vassy. “When you combine the clinical benefit with the practice
management improvements, you see why we are so pleased with
IMPAC.”
