Innovative Thinking, Traditional
Setting
The Gibbs Regional Cancer Center (GRCC), part of the Spartanburg
Regional Healthcare System, is a nationally recognized,
comprehensive cancer center that offers the latest treatments
and research trials to residents of five counties in Upstate
South Carolina and Western North Carolina. GRCC collects and
abstracts approximately 1500 new cancer cases each year with the
help of IMPAC’s Précis-Hospital registry management system.
Working Together for a Superior Product
GRCC signed on as a beta tester for Précis-Hospital in fall
2002. Diane Skinner, certified tumor registrar at GRCC, attests
that the system was impressive from the beginning, while IMPAC’s
leaders “were very knowledgeable, very enthusiastic about their
product, and committed to providing good service along with the
most up-to-date software available.” During the testing and
implementation stages, GRCC provided user feedback, along with a
“wish list” of features they’d always wanted in a software
system. IMPAC listened carefully and made modifications that
resulted in the commercial launch of a product – Précis-Hospital
– which Diane considers ahead of all other vendors. Diane
praised IMPAC for its dedication to continuous improvement.
Précis Allows Faster Reports, Greater
Accuracy
“We generate reports much more quickly now with Précis,” Skinner
said. “The system itself runs faster, and it’s a lot more
user-friendly, operating on a Windows platform.” GRCC also uses
IMPAC’s National Oncology DataBase™ (NODB), a current source of
longitudinal oncology data that allows simplified access to
cancer demographics. Skinner noted that the NODB support staff
is very helpful in providing useful survival analyses that are
based on comparative data, as well as offering lung cancer and
breast cancer survival statistics on a routine basis.
The improved edit checks also help to ensure the integrity of
the information sent to the state registry and National Cancer
Database. The secondary benefit to the increased accuracy is
that “getting it right the first time” eliminates the need to
pull and review charts later to make any necessary coding
corrections. Skinner noted, “IMPAC has been very supportive and
in tune with making changes that keep us current with new
requirements for coding and staging of cancer cases within the
process of abstracting. Précis allows for more productive use of
our time.”
