In 1999, FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital of Pinehurst, NC
decided to expand and revise its cancer program. To transform
itself from a small community radiation center into a
comprehensive cancer treatment center, it spared no expense.
Acquiring a modern linear accelerator and IMPAC’s verify and
record system, the implementation team, led by Kerry Husted,
radiation oncology director, made a commitment to quality and
excellence. “Where most centers don’t use IMPAC to its full
capacity, we utilize every module to operate paperless and
filmless. Tracking down treatment charts have become a thing of
the past,” she notes.
Easy Access to EMR
The IMPAC system makes electronic medical records (EMR)
accessible everywhere within the department in addition to
managing scheduling, treatment and consult notes, charge
capture, documentation, and nursing assessments. When port films
come from another facility, they can be scanned in only a few
seconds and downloaded into IMPAC’s image management system.
Diagnostic films, often difficult to obtain, are scanned in
order to have them available whenever they are needed.
Improving Productivity
IMPAC helps make FirstHealth one of the most technologically
advanced centers in North Carolina. Visits from administrators,
managers, and radiation therapists from other centers are
welcomed and encouraged to learn about IMPAC’s usefulness
and operation. One of the things that impress people most is the
speed at which FirstHealth provides accurate radiation therapy
treatments. Previously, patients spent fifteen minutes receiving
their treatment. IMPAC’s flexible integration with FirstHealth’s
dedicated and high-quality employees have cut that time to
twelve minutes, allowing the staff to maintain schedule accuracy
on a routine basis. This increase in productivity also means
patients spend less time in the department.
Increasing Confidence
According to Husted, “IMPAC is truly a state-of-the-art product.
It is akin to having an extra radiation therapist in the treat-
ment room that is never unfocused or tired. The treatment staff
at the FirstHealth cannot imagine working without the complete
system IMPAC offers for oncology and challenges any facility
to demonstrate the same high quality of care where IMPAC
wasn’t utilized.” |
