A leader in innovative health care in Northwest Arkansas for
over 40 years, Fayetteville Diagnostic Clinic (FDC) is committed
to providing quality, compassionate care. An affiliate of
Medical Associates of Northwest Arkansas (MANA), FDC serves more
than 400,000 patients in Northwest Arkansas, Northeast Oklahoma,
and Southwest Missouri. When Dr. Joe B. Hall established FDC in
1957, he predicted that FDC would be a leading healthcare
provider in Arkansas. FDC administrators knew from the start
that an essential tool in innovative care is providing advanced
healthcare technology. Today, FDC is the eighth largest medical
clinic in the state.
“Better technology aids the patient and physician in maintaining
a patient’s total health. Our lab is recognized for outstanding
quality and, along with the expanded testing services in
cardiology, pulmonology and imaging, we provide the most
comprehensive array of diagnostic testing outside of a hospital
in Northwest Arkansas," stated Kathy Zachry, MT, director of
laboratory services at FDC.
Automated Process
Five years ago, FDC added the laboratory information system (LIS)
from IMPAC Medical Systems, and last year received almost 40,000
lab orders and performed over 350,000 individual tests, drawing
an average of 126 patients per day. Nurses place all in-house
ancillary orders with the exception of add-ons, in addition to
three family practice clinics on-network placing LIS orders. “A
busy lab like ours has to have an LIS that automates the
processes of the lab and provides order management, quality
control and reporting tools to streamline our efforts,” said
Zachry. “IMPAC’s LIS ensures that our lab captures maximum
revenue—and has allowed us to expand our outreach program
without adding additional personnel—all while providing the
physician with superior reporting capabilities to best serve our
patients.”
Custom Reports
IMPAC’s LIS provides many reporting options, including custom
reports and canned reports. FDC uses several types of reports
as managerial tools and to monitor quality assurance. The LIS
system allows staff to access a patient’s complete test history
in a user-definable grid, or as a sophisticated graph to
evaluate an individual patient’s progress. Multiple tests can be
compared within the same normalized graph, allowing a physician
to examine multiple lab data sets at the same time. Zachry
explained “IMPAC’s LIS enables us to provide patient result
reports to requesting physicians quickly, either through
printing or faxing automatically, allowing us to have an impact
on the speed of patient treatment.”
FDC manages a large volume at their lab facility and is planning
on adding another family practice clinic to their network soon.
Zachry added, “While we have already used the LIS for five
years, we are still learning and discovering methods for us to
partner with the physicians and patients in the community. It’s
great to be able to make a difference.” |
