City of Hope National Medical Center, located just north of Los
Angeles, Calif. is one of just a handful of Comprehensive Cancer
Centers in the United States designated by the National Cancer
Institute (NCI), and is a founding member of the National
Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN). Recognized by U.S. News &
World Report as a one of America’s Best Cancer Hospitals, City
of Hope applies best of breed technology, including IMPAC’s
oncology management system and the TomoTherapy HI-ART System®,
which provides City of Hope oncologists with unprecedented
ability to deliver radiation therapy with surgical precision.
According to Phyllis Burch, administrative director, “City of
Hope has been using several modules of the IMPAC system since
its installation in 1999 and now, in combination with our TomoTherapy unit. We currently maintain a patient schedule for
the TomoTherapy unit, manually treat these patients and through
multi-code capture, bill all relevant TomoTherapy charges.
Additionally, the radiation oncologists are required to maintain
and approve all TomoTherapy treatment prescriptions, while
Physics and Dosimetry clinically approve treatment fields for
dose tracking.” These same safety measures are in place for of
our other treatment units as well, with the IMPAC system
requiring site and field approval before allowing the therapist
to treat.
Burch adds, “The IMPAC system allows us to import patient ID
photos and setup photos on all our TomoTherapy patients. The
photo ID is used as part of a double-identifier for patient
verification. We maintain nursing assessment documentation for
our TomoTherapy patients that include both clinical and
education documentation that are site-specific as well as
keeping track of patient allergies and medications.”
“In moving towards a more comprehensive electronic treatment
record, we are finding that some information management
requirements differ significantly from those in conventional
therapy and these are evident when examining the TomoTherapy
treatment log,” comments Burch. “Because of these key
differences between standard external beam and the TomoTherapy
delivery system, City of Hope is excited about the collaboration
between IMPAC and TomoTherapy and look forward to implementing
the new interface being developed.” |
