Mary Washington Hospital Relies on the IMPAC Oncology EMR to streamline treatment in a multi-vendor environment

Customer Snapshot

Mary Washington Hospital (MWH), part of MediCorp Health Systems in Fredericksburg, VA, has been the area’s premier health care provider for more than 100 years.  “We exist to improve the health status of all people within our community.”  Through the Cancer Center of Virginia, MWH offers the most advanced radiation therapy available. In 2000, they were the first community hospital in the state to introduce a new form of intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), targeting tumors with greater precision and stronger doses, while offering better protection to the healthy tissue surrounding tumors. The Cancer Center also offers a wide variety of health screenings and support groups.

MWH recently switched from Lantis to IMPAC and is currently treating 70-80 patients per day on both their Varian 2300 IX equipped with the 4D Integrated Treatment Console (ITC), and Siemens Primus. According to Brian Monzon, Chief Therapist at MWH, “Using an EMR platform that works so well regardless of delivery vendor was a strong motivating factor for us.  Since our treatment volume is relatively high for a two-machine department, having a common user environment to manage patient and patient treatments was absolutely critical to maintaining throughput. These factors led to a significant overall improvement in department workflow.”

One improvement Brian has seen with the new interface between the Varian 4D ITC and IMPAC is that, “I’m now able to add information to the schedule while the 4D is in treatment mode. Currently we are using the IMRT with the On-Board Imaging (OBI-IGRT) on Varian, in fact, all our prostate, head and neck patients are being treated with OBI.  We are also using the OBI for some of our prostate patients with fiducial seeds.  For the Primus, we have had no problems doing IMRT treatments.”

IMPAC products provide a vendor-independent solution that enables customers to use any combination of planning and delivery technology.  IMPAC has over 15 years experience in delivering these solutions to a variety of customers ranging from community hospitals to large university cancer clinics.
