The Arden
Cancer Centre has utilized an OIMS since 1994. They actively
sought to upgrade their legacy system, to better meet the
requirements of their practice's services – in particular
network wide connectivity and electronic prescribing for
chemotherapy. A detailed analysis of 17 tenders for OIMS
solutions resulted in the selection of IMPAC MOSAIQ™ Oncology
Information Management solution. Contracts were signed on
January 30th 2006 and implementation began in
February 06.
Multi-site Connectivity
Of all the
systems that were evaluated, MOSAIQ was the only software option
that was able to manage all the required Oncology disciplines in
one single database; Radiotherapy, Chemotherapy, Hematology and
Palliative Care.
Doctors working in peripheral clinics can access MOSAIQ's
electronic referral forms over Citrix. In the long term
chemotherapy prescribing and administration will also be
utilized in the peripheral clinics. “I see patients in a number
of clinics at varying geographical locations within the Cancer
Network. Many of my patients will be seen at more than one
centre during the course of their treatment and the ability to
have one central up-to-date medical record has revolutionized my
practice. I no longer have to work with multiple paper charts,
fax referral forms or remember to bring files with me when I
travel between clinics,” says Dr. Clive Irwin Consultant
Oncologist.
Innovation Everywhere
MOSAIQ now
manages the entire clinical and administrative function of the
Oncology service. An interface is established with the Trust’s
Master Patient Index (iSOFT PiMS), allowing all demographic data
to be entered and maintained in MOSAIQ.
MOSAIQ provides management reports and documents including
clinical letters, resulting in a fully paperless environment.
In
addition, Arden Cancer Centre has fully implemented MOSAIQ for
Chemotherapy, Electronic Prescribing, Nursing Administration,
Pharmacy and Laboratory Results. Lastly,
MOSAIQ abstracts treatment data and provides comprehensive
information to the local cancer registry.
This feature provides the ability to accurately create detailed
statistical reports, including full Radiotherapy and
Chemotherapy activity monitoring.
Adoption and Success
The MOSAIQ
system has been met with a very positive response from all staff
at the Arden Cancer Centre. The major advantage that the
hospital has achieved is the all-inclusive integrated model of
cancer care. Arden Cancer Centre Superintendent Radiographer,
Bill Kelly, said: "The new system has many benefits for both the
patient and staff alike. We will have all of the patient's
information in one single system including x-rays and this will
be available for the consultant, radiographer, pharmacist or
anyone else involved in the patient's care to instantly access
the patient's medical record.” In addition he is looking forward
to having the ability to analyze activity data for Chemotherapy
services. Under the previous paper based system this was not
possible. MOSAIQ instantly brings enormous advantages with the
ability to now audit these services allowing better planning of
future care and services.
