profile: CentraState Medical Center
Acute care center improves productivity and technological innovation by combining image-guided radiation therapy with an image-enabled EMR and workflow management system.

Customer Snapshot

This 270-bed acute care center was reaccredited by the ACR in 2006. It is one of 60 clinical trial sites for the Cancer Trials Support Unit of the NCI, and a clinical research affiliate of The Cancer Institute of New Jersey.

Challenge: Improve efficiency and patient service.
Solution:
Implement IMPAC’s MOSAIQ image-enabled EMR with image guided treatment management (IGTM™), which streamlines IGRT workflows without forced dependency on delivery systems manufacturer
Results:
Realize a highly functioning IGRT treatment environment with an oncology-specific EMR solution that allows for greater flexibility for future equipment purchases

CentraState Medical Centers’ cancer program is designed to bring hope to patients through a continuum of world-class services, including radiation therapy.

Recently, CentraState advanced its patient care technology offerings to include image guided radiation therapy (IGRT), implementing its first IGRT system in June 2005 by upgrading its Varian linear accelerator to the 4D Console with On-Board Imager (OBI).

To streamline and manage radiation therapy treatment on the Varian 4D, CentraState uses IMPAC’s integrated clinical and administrative oncology workflow management solution, MOSAIQ™ with image-guided treatment management (IGTM™).

MOSAIQ image-enabled electronic medical record (EMR) with IGTM helps CentraState coordinate and sequence the entire radiation therapy process, supporting independent validation, automatic setup, accurate delivery and thorough documentation. IGTM™ retrieves images and information that are typically distributed across multiple systems into MOSAIQ’s single database, which can be accessed anywhere by authorized users.

It was critical for the oncology EMR to support treatment delivery systems from multiple vendors. “We were planning to implement the 4D Console and OBI when we decided to convert to MOSAIQ. IMPAC’s support for the new image-guided technology was critical,” says Jan Dragotta, clinical director of radiation oncology. “I was impressed by how smoothly we transitioned to the 4D. In less than a month we were treating 30 patients a day and our productivity continued to improve.”

Moving to the 4D Console and OBI made sense because it aligned with the needs of the patient population.

“With 30% of our patients being treated with intensity modulated radiotherapy — and therefore requiring pre-port setup fields — we needed to implement OBI as well as manipulate and store images into an image-enabled oncology chart,” says Dragotta. “We appreciate the value of an independent verification solution that provides us with choice and flexibility in our equipment purchases.”

Effective support of IGRT workflow management must be able to connect with imaging and delivery systems from virtually any equipment vendor. MOSAIQ image-enabled EMR with IGTM allowa CentraState to remain at the forefront of cancer care technology while supporting the center’s decision to select the products that best match their patients’ needs.
