Midwest Center for Hematology/Oncology upgrades to MOSAIQ oncology system

Challenge: Upgrade the clinic’s electronic medical record (EMR) solution
Solution:
Beta test and implement MOSAIQ™ Image-Enabled Oncology EMR with MOSAIQ™ Structured Noting module
Results:
Smooth implementation and clinical operation, including consolidated work list, structured noting with voice recognition, automated E&M coding

At the Midwest Center for Hematology/Oncology, Dr. Lawrence Schilder and Dr. Sunil Narula pride themselves on their technologically advanced approach to medical oncology. So, naturally, both were excited to participate as a beta test site for MOSAIQ 1.0, IMPAC’s next-generation oncology system.

“We were very interested in implementing the MOSAIQ solution, measuring its capabilities and seeing how well it lived up to its promises,” says Dr. Narula. “We are very satisfied with the system, which is now in clinical operation at our facility.”

The new MOSAIQ system features an advanced database platform and a new user interface.

“We’re excited about our opportunity to upgrade to MOSAIQ and build upon all the benefits we found in the original IMPAC EMR and practice management system,” says Dr. Schilder. “MOSAIQ helps further our objective to enhance quality and patient care while advancing our center’s medical technology.”

Important new capabilities

One of the most powerful tools in the MOSAIQ system, according to Dr. Narula, is the consolidated work list, which allows physicians to access a comprehensive list of outstanding tasks by clicking on a single window. “Previously, I had to access several different modules to make sure I had all my tasks identified,” he says. “Now, I have one work list that shows me everything I need to do. It allows me to focus more energy on patient care.” The physicians also appreciate the look and feel of the new user interface, which can be customized for individual preferences.

MOSAIQ Structured Noting

Both physicians are also taking advantage of the system’s Structured Noting module, which allows them to point and click on codified findings to document patient visits. This speeds productivity and puts the language in a standard format that allows physicians and other staff to extract reportable data from the system.

MOSAIQ Structured Noting can also automate the selection of E&M codes based on the information already contained in the medical record, which improves accuracy and productivity for billing and reimbursement.

“In addition, we are using voice recognition within MOSAIQ Structured Noting,” says Dr. Schilder. “In every medical record there is a free-form text field where we can describe certain elements of the visit. Instead of typing text in this field, we just click in the field and start talking. MOSAIQ allows our voice recognition software, Dragon Naturally Speaking, to drop text in the field as we talk. It works just like dictation, without the extra step of transcription. This allows me to personalize my correspondence to referring doctors, and communicate the rationale behind treatment decisions.”
