Informatics Scholarship for
Pathology
Residents and Fellows
API, the CAP Foundation, and Impac Software are
pleased to offer an exciting program for residents and
fellows in
Pathology. Designed to further expose pathologists in training
to new developments in information technology, the Pathology
Informatics Scholarship includes a $5,000 grant to defray
educational, living, and travel expenses incurred with the
opportunity.
Learning objectives of the program are:
- To develop an understanding of pathology informatics as it
relates to oncology information systems,
- To observe the development of software and related control
processes in a regulated environment,
- To increase his/her understanding of a particular facet of
pathology informatics by pursuing a limited scope academic
project during the course of the rotation. The resident, working
with an oncologist with expertise in information technology,
will identify a mutually agreed-upon research topic and
questions to be addressed.
The grant is a two-part elective rotation for a resident to:
- Attend a 3-week rotation at Impac Software’s headquarters near
San Jose, CA, in November 2006 to learn oncology database
information retrieval techniques, software development
concepts, and control processes. The onsite program is
supervised by Joel Goldwein, MD, formerly a radiation
oncology residency program chair and now Vice President for
Medical Affairs at Impac Software.
- Attend a 3-week elective rotation at an institution
involved in the application of pathology/medical informatics
to cancer care. Applicants may propose an institution of
their choice.
For assistance with finding a host institution for the
(second) elective rotation, please contact the Association for
Pathology Informatics by telephone (301-634-7820) or email
API@asip.org.
Eligibility
Second, third or fourth-year pathology residents in an ACGME
accredited training program in the United States are
eligible to apply. Some prior exposure to informatics and
database systems is highly recommended. Membership in both
CAP and API is required. Membership in each of these
organizations is available free of charge to junior members,
and membership application forms may be submitted with the
application if needed. All arrangements, including
permission from the applicant’s program director, must be
made prior to application for the grant.
Applications & Deadlines
Eligible pathology residents and fellows must submit four (4) copies of
their application documents (application form, letter from
residency director, essay, and CV) to the CAP Foundation
postmarked by June 1, 2006. The essay should include a brief
statement of career interests, why the applicant is
interested in pursuing this opportunity, level of knowledge
and experience in informatics, and a summary of the elective
rotation plan (less than 1000 words total). Completion of
the second rotation is flexible as long as completed by June
2007.
Review Process
A committee of API and the CAP Foundation will review and
rank all applications for submission to the CAP Foundation
and API Boards for approval. Applicants will be notified of
their status by July 15, 2006.
