Electronic transfer of synoptic data between pathology and cancer registry systems will support RPP2 goals

In an ongoing effort to improve the quality and efficiency of data acquisition into IMPAC Cancer Registry, IMPAC has nearly completed installation of the PathConnect interface between PowerPath, IMPAC’s anatomic pathology management solution and MRS, one of IMPAC’s leading cancer registry products. PathConnect leverages IMPAC’s expertise in both these areas and gives us an opportunity to participate in the development of a new interface standard. The new pathology-to-registry interface automates the process of acquiring pathology data for cancer registry.

For more than a year, the collaboration between IMPAC, Maine Medical Center, and Maine State Cancer Registry, and Dahl Chase Pathology Laboratories under the direction of the Centers for Disease Control/National Program of Cancer Registries, will soon enter clinical data collection and testing of messages that conform to HL7, DICOM, and CAP Protocol standards. The expedited transfers of anatomic pathology’s more detailed synoptic reports ultimately benefit cancer registries' ability to analyze cancer's origins and the efficacy of treatments.
