Mountain View, CA, 25 July 2006
IMPAC Medical Systems, Inc. (IMPAC), an Elekta Company and a
leading provider of information technology solutions for
oncology care, announces that since May 2006 The University of
Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center has been in clinical use with
IMPAC's treatment management solution to manage delivery and
chart radiation therapy treatments at its new proton therapy
center.
“The clinical implementation of EMR support for proton therapy
represents years of collaborative design and development between
M. D. Anderson Cancer Center and IMPAC,” stated Annette Coleman,
IMPAC’s product manager for multi-modality, image enabled
charting. Coleman added that while the project focused primarily
on EMR support for proton therapy, customers using more
conventional treatment methods will benefit from the work done
on this project. “Many new and exciting features developed for
proton therapy will soon be incorporated into the conventional
treatment environment within MOSAIQ™, including fundamental
enhancements and added efficiencies to the treatment delivery
process.”
“The proton therapy center was among the many innovative patient
care projects undertaken by M. D. Anderson Cancer Center,
resulting from the sum total of the hard work of a
multi-disciplinary team including radiation oncologists,
physicists, information services professionals and senior
leadership,” stated James D. Cox, MD, Professor and Head,
Division of Radiation Oncology. “Moreover, the shared vision
and effort of a group of vendors including IMPAC made the
process manageable and the outcome a reality. IMPAC integrated
proton support into our existing IT implementation, allowing us
to extend our current chartless radiation therapy environment to
the new proton center.”
“IMPAC continues its mission to provide the best oncology
information management system to support any combination of
treatment planning and delivery equipment our customers may
choose,” stated Jay Hoey, President and CEO of IMPAC. “The
development efforts devoted to the proton center further
demonstrate our dedication to providing leading-edge clinical
capabilities in multi-manufacturer environments, empowering
customers to pursue best-of-breed solutions. Our worldwide
installed base of oncology EMRs, which integrates with planning
systems and treatment devices from multiple manufacturers,
demonstrates how we leverage our experience to provide
comprehensive management of advanced radiation therapy
treatments.”
The multi-vendor team that collaborated with IMPAC to meet M. D.
Anderson’s specific clinical requirements included Hitachi, Ltd.
and Varian Medical Systems.
