Mountain View, CA, April 8, 2005
IMPAC Medical Systems,
Inc., part of the Elekta Group and a leading provider of
information technology solutions for oncology care, today named
Vicki Maggard, RN, CTR, OCN, of Grady Memorial Hospital in
Delaware, OH, the recipient of the 2005
IMPAC Registrar of the Year award.
IMPAC’s Registrar of the Year program honors outstanding
registrars who have made valuable contributions to the success
of the registry and those who further expand their contributions
to the community and broader facility.
Maggard, cancer program coordinator at Grady Memorial Hospital,
is recognized for her exceptional service over the past twelve
years. Passing their first survey with the American College of
Surgeons (ACoS) for four-year accreditation in 1997, they again
passed in 2001 and are currently preparing for the 2005 survey.
Maggard successfully faced the challenge alone, and during this
same time trained to become the first clinical trial nurse at
Grady, offering trials to all new and recurring oncology
patients. With five percent enrolled in clinical trials – more
than double the national average of two percent – Maggard has
committed to lifetime surveillance of the 38 patients who have
been part of clinical trials at Grady.
In addition, Maggard has sought out and received grants totaling
over $160,000 to further education programs in the community,
including a Susan G. Komen grant for outreach breast cancer
education. Maggard added “As we all know, early stage breast
cancer has a much better survival rate than late stage, so
education is crucial to the cause.” Maggard recently hired an
education nurse and will soon hire a part-time CTR. She
concluded, “We are going to build a new hospital soon and I hope
this department continues to grow to better serve our cancer
patients.”
“IMPAC is honored to recognize Vicki Maggard as the 2005 IMPAC
Registrar of the Year,” said Joseph K. Jachinowski, IMPAC
president. “Vicki makes a significant contribution to her
registry and community, voluntarily expanding her knowledge and
skills while tirelessly pursuing education grants in order to do
more. Her commitment is a terrific example to others in the
field.” In recognition of the accomplishment, IMPAC will provide
Maggard
with a stipend to support ongoing professional development.
Donna M. Goss, CTR, at William W. Backus Hospital in Norwich,
CT, won the 2005 IMPAC Outstanding Registrar award and a stipend
to support ongoing professional development. Demonstrating her
commitment to cancer registry, Goss single-handedly organized
and updated the tumor registry through a non-computerized
accounting method, and then computerized it years later. A
Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) with William W. Backus Hospital
since it was established in 1997, Goss successfully applied for
the hospital to receive accreditation as an American College of
Surgeons Community Cancer Center in 2001 and as a Comprehensive
Cancer Center in 2004. A member of the National Cancer
Registrars Association (NCRA) since 1997 and a CTR since 1999,
Goss has held many positions within the state Tumor Registrars
Association, including president and vice president.
Jachinowski added “We are pleased to name Donna M. Goss as the
2005 IMPAC Outstanding Registrar. She has demonstrated years of
dedication and success in cancer registry, and is very deserving
of this recognition of her achievements.”
