IMPAC and CMS Finalize OpenRT™ Certification Program Agreement Streamlining Interoperability Between the Electronic Medical Record and Treatment Planning Systems

IMPAC Medical Systems announces partnership with Computerized Medical Systems

Mountain View, CA, November 1, 2001
IMPAC Medical Systems, Inc., the leading provider of integrated clinical and administrative management systems for cancer specialists, today announced the introduction of OpenRT™ Certification, a partnership program with treatment planning vendors including Computerized Medical Systems, Inc. (CMS), of St. Louis, Mo.

OpenRT Certification establishes compliance, validation, deployment, and support standards for the interoperability of treatment planning systems with IMPAC’s Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and, subsequently from the EMR to the linear accelerator for treatment delivery. “Standards for data interchange are meaningless if the interoperating systems do not utilize them consistently and the interfaces are not validated,” said Joe Jachinowski, president and chief executive officer of IMPAC.

“IMPAC has initiated the OpenRT Certification partnership program as a means to improve the interoperability and support of a multi-component system,” continued Jachinowski. “The OpenRT Certification partnership confirms a vendor’s commitment to developing and adhering to interface standards that ensure treatment plans can be seamlessly transferred, verified, and delivered, thereby providing a truly integrated clinical solution that improves overall process efficiency and the quality of care provided.”

“CMS and IMPAC have both been at the forefront of developing open system-to-system communications,” said Doug Sprague, president and chief executive officer of CMS. “However, interfaces and protocols can become an artificial limit as well as an aid. This collaboration removes many limits and lets both companies work in support of the customer and their patients. We expect our customers will quickly see the benefit of this program in the efficiency they can work with both organizations.”

OpenRT Certification also establishes a service partnership between the vendors to guarantee smooth implementation and Single-Point™ Customer Service. “Customers can purchase the treatment planning system and the EMR/V&R system of their choice without worrying if the systems will work together,” said Andrea Morgan, radiation oncology charting product manager for IMPAC. “By the end of 2001, customer support will be available in a single phone call; Single-Point Customer Service allows customers to call either IMPAC or CMS to resolve any problems that may arise.”
