Mountain View, CA, November 1, 2001
IMPAC
Medical Systems, Inc., the leading provider of integrated clinical
and administrative management systems for cancer specialists,
today announced the introduction of OpenRT™ Certification, a
partnership program with treatment planning vendors including
NOMOS Corp., of Sewickley, Penn.
OpenRT
Certification establishes compliance, validation, deployment, and
support standards for the interoperability of treatment planning
systems with IMPAC’s Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and,
subsequently from the EMR to the linear accelerator for treatment
delivery. “The OpenRT Certification partnership confirms a mutual
commitment to developing and complying with interface standards
that ensure treatment plans can be seamlessly transferred,
verified, and delivered, thereby providing a truly integrated
clinical solution,” said Joe Jachinowski, president and chief
executive officer of IMPAC.
He added,
“IMPAC initiated the OpenRT Certification partnership program as a
means to improve the interoperability and support of a
multi-component system. The combination of IMPAC’s world leading
installed base of linear accelerator Intensity Modulated Radiation
Therapy (IMRT) verification systems with NOMOS’ significant IMRT
treatment planning experience (over 14,000 patient plans) provides
the know-how to improve overall IMRT process efficiency and the
quality of care.”
“NOMOS is
the pioneer of IMRT and is the recognized leader in this advanced
field of radiation therapy,” said John W. Manzetti, NOMOS Corp.
president and chief executive officer. “Our partnership with IMPAC
will further strengthen NOMOS’ leadership position and our
commitment to our customers to provide the highest possible level
of service and support with completely integrated systems.”
OpenRT
Certification also establishes a service partnership between the
vendors to guarantee smooth implementation and Single-Point™
Customer Service. “Customers can purchase the treatment planning
system and the EMR/V&R system of their choice without worrying if
the systems will work together,” said Andrea Morgan, radiation
oncology charting product manager for IMPAC. “By the end of 2001,
customer support will be available in a single phone call;
Single-Point Customer Service allows customers to call either
IMPAC or NOMOS to resolve any problems that may arise.”

About NOMOS Corporation
NOMOS Corporation is the world’s leading supplier of planning and
delivery technology for Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy
(IMRT). This precise treatment approach, which NOMOS introduced to
the oncology industry in 1992, has been described as the most
significant breakthrough in cancer therapy in the past 30 years
and is now becoming the accepted ‘gold standard’ of care in
radiation treatment. NOMOS Non-Invasive Scalpel™ IMRT allows an
escalated radiation dose to be delivered to the tumor while
limiting exposure and damage to nearby healthy tissue. More than
14,000 patients have safely received IMRT treatments at hospitals
equipped with NOMOS’ clinically proven PEACOCK, CORVUS, and MIMiC
systems throughout the world. This represents more than 95% of
IMRT patients treated worldwide on FDA approved commercial
systems. NOMOS also offers BAT, a unique ultrasound-based organ
locator used in prostate cancer treatments, and PEREGRINE, the
first commercially available treatment planning system to
incorporate Monte Carlo statistical techniques to more accurately
predict the radiation dose delivered to tumors and other
structures within the patient’s body during a radiation treatment.
