Mountain View, CA, August 1, 2001
IMPAC announces the
release of “Guidelines for Patients to Evaluate Cancer Websites.”
This evaluation guide has been created by IMPAC’s Vice President
of Medical Affairs, Joel Goldwein, M.D., who has practiced in
radiation oncology for 18 years. Dr. Goldwein developed these
guidelines to help cancer patients evaluate online cancer
information sites and receive the most accurate, reliable
information available. This guide has been posted on IMPAC’s
website at
../../events/webevalform.html as a public service and will be
updated periodically.
“The Internet is an empowering tool that provides a selection of
thousands of cancer websites for patients to explore. At the same
time, the Internet opens up the possibility for distribution of
inaccurate information, and identifying superior sites can be a
difficult task. These guidelines help patients glean out the
better sites,” explains Dr. Goldwein. “At IMPAC, we believe that
empowering patients with evaluation tools to locate accurate
information will help facilitate communication with their
physicians and will lead to better decisions, improved outcomes,
and reduced costs.”
Dr. Goldwein has been invited to speak to a group of physicians on
Sunday, August 5th in Colorado Springs about his experience with
patients and the Internet. The Website Evaluation Guidelines will
be discussed as part of his lecture entitled “Patients and the
Internet – An Information Explosion: How to Deal with it as a
Physician.”
