Mountain View, CA, June 28, 2001
IMPAC today announced
the installation of its IMRT OpenSuite™ at the Swedish Medical
Center Cancer Institute (SCI) in Seattle. IMPAC’s IMRT OpenSuite™
is a suite of products that assures precise setup, consistent
delivery, and accurate documentation of Intensity Modulated
Radiation Therapy (IMRT). The system allows both static and
dynamic IMRT plans created from radiation treatment planning
systems (RTPs) to be imported directly into the company's
electronic medical record (eCHART™) for subsequent auto-setup,
verification, and recording by the company’s leading verification
system (SEQUENCER™).
IMRT is the use of a precisely controlled radiation beam that
conforms to the shape of the tumor, reducing the risk of
destroying adjacent healthy tissue. But IMRT administration
demands the use of sophisticated software to control complex
treatment machine functions. By partnering with IMPAC, SCI was
able to upgrade their existing Varian treatment equipment to
streamline the setup, verification, delivery, and recording of
IMRT treatments. IMRT OpenSuite™ helped them avoid expensive
equipment purchases but also saved considerable time and effort.
Prior to installing IMRT OpenSuite™, Swedish relied upon a
time-consuming process of manual checks and balances to ensure
accurate IMRT delivery.
Robert Kover, MS, RTT, Radiation Therapist at SCI, points out
that, “prior to the installation of IMPAC’s IMRT OpenSuite™, each
patient treatment was administered by three radiation therapists,
but now with the help of IMRT OpenSuite™ we use two therapists:
one at the console and the other setting up the patient. As a
result, the focus of the treatment has shifted from the
therapist’s attention on setup towards closer attention to the
patient.” Erno Katona, PhD, Senior Radiological Physicist at SCI
also claims that administering IMRT with IMPAC’s system is
“fantastic because as a department we are saving valuable patient
time by not having to deal with the manual set up of the hardware;
instead that time is used for important patient care.”
According to Joseph K. Jachinowski, CEO and president of IMPAC,
“we offer clinicians a fully integrated solution enabling them to
perform all IMRT-related clinical functions, as well as complete
patient charting including diagnosis, staging, assessments, and
transcriptions. And IMPAC’s electronic medical recording is fully
integrated with IMPAC’s leading practice management system thereby
helping to improve overall communication, process efficiency and
quality of care.”
Dr. Nils Johanson and a group of Seattle’s leading Swedish-born
businessmen, whose abilities and efforts had brought them success
in this new land, founded Swedish Medical Center in 1910. Over the
past 90 years Swedish Medical Center has grown into the
Northwest’s largest, most comprehensive health-care system
representing virtually all diagnostic and surgical specialties.
Swedish now boasts more than 7,000 employees and a medical staff
of more than 1,800 providers between First Hill, Ballard and
Providence campuses. Directed by a volunteer Board of Trustees
comprised of business leaders and physician representatives,
Swedish enjoys a reputation for quality care that is recognized
