IMPAC Sponsored Annual Award Recognizes Informatics High Achievement in Oncology Nursing

SUNNYVALE, CA, April 4 2007
IMPAC Medical Systems, Inc. and the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) announced today that Vilma Lopez, RN, MSN, OCN, is the 2007 recipient of the annual ONS/IMPAC Excellence in Nursing Informatics award. IMPAC sponsors this ONS annual award to recognize outstanding service in the practice of oncology nursing and applied informatics. The award will be presented to Ms. Lopez during the ONS Annual Conference in Las Vegas, NV, April 24-27, 2007.

Ms. Lopez was nominated by her peers for exemplary service in clinical research and data management. She is currently a clinical research specialist at University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX, where she designs clinical research tools.

“Nursing informatics increases productivity, promotes creativity, and enhances the nurse's role in clinical research. The tools I design make clinical research data more accurate and protocol management easier,” describes Ms. Lopez. “I feel honored to receive the 2007 Excellence in Nursing Informatics Award from ONS. It means recognition from other oncology nursing experts and the opportunity to share my work with all other ONS members.”

The processes of clinical trials are the main focus of Ms. Lopez’s research. Her recent presentations at the ONS Congress include New Nursing Strategy to Improve Patient Understanding of Informed Consent for Phase I Clinical Trials, and Automating a Nursing Process: How to Design a Computer Tool to Verify Eligibility for Clinical Trials.

Ms. Lopez is also active in the ONS Houston Chapter and was recently elected editor of the newsletter, which she converted from a static document to a dynamic collection of web pages. In 2004 she facilitated the first electronic voting use for ONS chapter elections.

The Oncology Nursing Society (http://www.ons.org) is a national organization of more than 28,000 oncology nurses and other healthcare professionals committed to promoting excellence in oncology nursing and quality cancer care. ONS is the largest association of oncology professionals in the world.
