Michener and IMPAC launch e-Health Record System in Applied Health Education

$1.6 million donation-in-kind to enable simulation and interprofessional education

November 21, 2007 Toronto, Canada
The Michener Institute for Applied Health Sciences and IMPAC Medical Systems Inc., an Elekta company, announce a historic new strategic alliance that will introduce an integrated state-of-the-art e-Health record system into the classrooms and labs of Canada’s leading educator of healthcare technologists and therapists.

The e-Health record system (EHR) is a unified combination of three established information management systems including Radio-Therapy Information System, Laboratory Information System and overall Hospital Information System, that reflects the work flow practices of healthcare teams in a simulated educational environment.

IMPAC’s $1.6 million investment advances Michener’s vision for developing an electronic health record reflective of the interprofessional applied health science team. This investment comprises of equipment, software, and professional services as well as faculty and staff education to effectively implement and operate the e-Health Record System. It stands as the largest technological investment in Michener’s 50 year history to date.

“This significant investment represents a major contribution in support of Michener’s interprofessional curriculum and simulated clinical workflow,” explains Dr. Paul Gamble, President and CEO, The Michener Institute. “It’s an ideal public-private-partnership where both institutions have the opportunity to learn, and together, create innovative solutions for the applied health science community.” The strategic alliance was announced on November 15, 2007.

According to Brad Niblett, Director, Information Management, The Michener Institute, “The EHR will provide applied health students with the ability to experience a simulated clinical work flow; build dynamic, pragmatic patient case studies and records; and with the integration of these systems, support the information requirements of the healthcare team, and in the end, interprofessional collaboration.”

“We’re very pleased to establish a strategic alliance with The Michener Institute and contribute to the education of Ontario’s most sought-after medical technologists,” said Jay Hoey President and CEO, IMPAC Medical Systems Inc. “Michener graduates are providing a direct contribution to patient care and medical treatment outcomes. IMPAC’s state-of-the art technology enables Michener students to participate actively in simulation experiences that will ultimately enhance their interprofessional learning, improve their skills and amplify their talents as members of the healthcare team.”

Implementation of the EHR has already begun thanks to the collaborative input and efforts of faculty from Michener’s medical radiation sciences program. Simulated workflows will be in place in time for the interprofessional simulation clinical semester in May 2008.
