Mountain View, CA, May 5, 2006
IMPAC Medical Systems Inc., an Elekta company and a leading
provider of oncology information technology solutions, today
awarded the 2006 IMPAC Registrar of the Year award to Karla
Sorenson, RHIT, CTR, cancer registrar at Sioux Valley Hospital (SVH)
in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
IMPAC’s Registrar of the Year program honors outstanding
registrars who make valuable contributions to the success of the
registry and who extend their contributions to benefit the
broader medical facility and community.
Sorenson is recognized for her exceptional service to SVH over
the past twenty-four years. She joined as the first cancer
registrar at the medical center, and participated in the
registry’s implementation in 1982, helping the registry grow
from a single registrar with a paper-based system to today’s
fully automated registry with a staff of four and a core
electronic medical records (EMR) database. Sorenson continues to
contribute to her facility’s automation by leveraging the single
EMR database’s multi-site functionality to provide telecommuting
opportunities for SVH registrars.
Karla also recognizes the value of reliable,
useable data in a medical setting. To that end, she uses her
innate sense when analyzing data, and checks outside data
sources to investigate variances to ensure that the data are of
the highest quality. Sorenson’s passion for her profession and
recognition of its importance to oncology motivates her to
advocate for the involvement of professional registrars in data
management in the South Dakota State Cancer Registry.
In addition, Sorenson impacts her co-workers
positively, as she acts as a mentor and role model to regional
colleagues, co-workers, and students. She has served as
President of the South Dakota Cancer Registrars Association and
is an active member of both National Cancer Registrars
Association and Cancer Registrars of the Dakotas.
"It is quite humbling to be recognized by my peers who have
selected me as the 2006 Registrar of the Year. I am truly
grateful to be in a career that documents our progress in the
war on cancer." Says Karla Sorenson, CTR, Sioux Valley Hospital
"IMPAC is honored to recognize Karla Sorenson as the 2006 IMPAC
Registrar of the Year," said Jay Hoey, IMPAC president and CEO.
"Karla is an exceptional registrar who makes a significant
contribution to her registry and community, actively expanding
her knowledge and skills to ensure that the registry is
operating efficiently. Her involvement and success is admirable
and a terrific example to others in the field.
IMPAC would also like to announce the recipient for honorable
mention: Cecyle Haley, CTR, Norman Regional Hospital, Norman,
OK.
