Mountain View, CA, November 27, 2001
IMPAC Medical Systems, Inc., the leading provider of
integrated clinical and administrative management systems for
cancer specialists, announced today a partnership with the EMS
Wireless division of EMS Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: ELMG) to
integrate EMS Wireless’ state-of-the-art wireless technology with
Multi-ACCESS™,
IMPAC’s oncology management system, which combines a practice
management system with a comprehensive electronic medical record
(EMR). EMS Wireless offers wireless backbone capabilities over a
complete line of healthcare mobile devices, including handhelds,
scanners and its standardized platform, the Mobile Clinical
Workstation™.
Integrating current technologies with mobile laptops and
pen-tablet computers provides clinicians the ability to roam
pre-defined areas while maintaining a constant link to critical
data in the Multi-ACCESS database - reducing the likelihood of
medical errors from reliance on outdated or unavailable
information. In addition to the benefits of mobile data access,
clinicians also have the ability to document patient notes and
evaluations at the point-of-care resulting in notably improved
patient documentation.
“Traditionally, the only solution for oncologists to access
patient information at the point-of-care was to install a PC in
virtually every exam room,” said Joseph K. Jachinowski, president
and chief executive officer, IMPAC. “Our partnership with EMS
Wireless provides a wireless solution which is relatively simple
to implement and addresses the growing need to provide flexible
access to critical clinical information. Not only does it
streamline the process of managing patient data, but it also gives
oncologists more time to spend with patients, as they need less
time to input patient notes.”
“As the market leader in wireless LAN solutions for hospitals, EMS
Technologies is pleased to team up with IMPAC Medical Systems to
extend our healthcare solution to a new segment of the industry,
the physician market. Wireless technology can play an important
role in enhancing patient safety by reducing data-entry errors,
whether it be patient medical histories or medication
requirements,” said Keith Washington, general manager, EMS
Technologies’ Healthcare Products.
By using a mobile PC device with Multi-ACCESS, an oncologist can
view and add information to the patient’s EMR, read care plans,
order chemotherapy and lab tests, as well as email transcriptions
to the patient’s referring physician – all performed directly at
the point-of-care. Clinicians can also access the practice
management features of Multi-ACCESS including scheduling, billing
and IMPAC’s innovative Multi-Charge Capture™
application.
“Since we implemented the wireless network four months ago, I have
been using a wireless laptop to access virtually all of the
information I need -- right at the bedside,” said Robert Kessler,
M.D. of Hematology Oncology Specialists, a 14-physician,
multi-site cancer facility in New Orleans. “I’ve found the access
to Multi-ACCESS invaluable, as it allows me to obtain critical
patient information exactly when I need it.”
