Radiation Oncology Centers Improving Performance of Oncology Information Management Systems with PacketShaper® by Packeteer®

Mountain View, CA and Cupertino, CA. November 12, 2002
Continuing to build on success in the healthcare market, Packeteer®, Inc. (NASDAQ: PKTR), a leading provider of application-intelligent traffic management solutions, today announced that Tacoma Radiation Oncology Center and Western Washington Oncology had deployed Packeteer’s PacketShaper® systems to enhance the performance of their oncology information management solutions.

Both centers implemented PacketShaper to improve application performance on their wide-area networks (WAN). This implementation will prioritize IMPAC’s oncology management software solutions at both facilities by eliminating conflicts between competing applications on healthcare networks, and will reprioritize the transfer of DICOM-based images so as not to compete with mission-critical applications.

At Tacoma Radiation, where remote locations are connected by T1 lines, electronic images were winning the battle for bandwidth, slowing the transfer of critical data. To remedy the situation, PacketShaper will classify all traffic and allow network managers to give mission-critical data priority over the less time-sensitive image transfers.

“Our application performance has improved tremendously since we installed PacketShaper,” said Steve Bader, COO of Tacoma Radiation. “With PacketShaper, we’re able to give the more critical applications, such as cancer information management, the bandwidth they need while balancing less time-sensitive traffic, such as image transfers.”

At Western Washington Oncology, a variety of applications were competing with the IMPAC traffic, which was being accessed by more than 30 remote sites via Citrix. Windows updates in the main office, employees downloading files, people sending large email attachments, and even people listening to Internet radio all contributed to degradation of the application performance.

“I can’t imagine running IMPAC with Citrix connections and not having a PacketShaper on the line,” said Craig Wyzik, IT manager for Western Washington Oncology. “The performance improvement and ease of administration makes the purchase of PacketShaper easy to justify; as our CFO said, ‘we can’t not have it.’”

PacketShaper is an application-intelligent traffic management system that delivers predictable, efficient performance for applications running over the WAN and Internet. The combination of its layer-7 classification, analysis, control, and reporting capabilities enables network administrators to keep critical traffic moving at an appropriate pace through bandwidth bottlenecks and prevents any single type of traffic from monopolizing the link.

“These deployments illustrate one of the many ways that PacketShaper systems can be used to benefit healthcare networks,” said Todd Krautkremer, vice president of marketing for Packeteer. “Classifying traffic and giving some types priority over others can be, in these environments, truly mission-critical.”
