IMPAC Introduces PhAST Note™ An Electronic Noting System That Saves Oncology Practices Time and Money

Mountain View, CA, July 17, 2001
IMPAC Medical Systems, Inc., the leading provider of integrated clinical and administrative management systems for cancer specialists since 1990, announced today the launch of PhAST Note™ (Physician Assisted Structured Template Note), an electronic noting system that helps oncologists document patient evaluations in under three minutes. By using logically structured templates, PhAST Note generates the complete text of a patient note as part of the patient’s electronic medical record (EMR), thereby eliminating the need for time-consuming and costly dictation and transcription services. PhAST Note also includes a charge capture/coding feature that helps oncology practices capture revenue that would have been lost due to undercoding. PhAST Note automatically generates a suggested E&M (Evaluation & Management) code based on the information documented by the oncologist in the patient note.

“IMPAC has spent the last 11 years developing and expanding our electronic medical record into the most comprehensive EMR solution available for oncology. PhAST Note is the latest in a long history of innovative product solutions,” said Joseph K. Jachinowski, president and CEO of IMPAC. “With PhAST Note integrated into our electronic medical record, radiation and medical oncologists now have a tool that helps them avoid the time and expense of dictating and transcribing notes from their patient encounters and ensures that they are properly compensated for their time.”

IMPAC’s extensive electronic medical record includes core charting features such as diagnosis, staging, patient assessments and orders management, as well as features specific to each oncology specialty. PhAST Note expands IMPAC’s EMR to include flexible noting capability. During a patient evaluation, the oncologist selects relevant information from a pre-defined template or uses the system’s free text feature to enter unique, patient-specific data by voice recognition or by selecting from a list of frequently-used comments. Because templates are available for multiple diagnoses and conditions, the oncologist can document even the most complex patient encounter, such as working up a patient with colon cancer, hypertension and diabetes.

IMPAC’s EMR – including PhAST Note – is an integral part of IMPAC’s Multi-ACCESS™ oncology management system, which is designed to meet the needs of any type of cancer program: private practices, hospital-based departments and geographically separate, integrated healthcare delivery networks. Multi-ACCESS is unique in its integration of core business functions such as scheduling and billing with a comprehensive electronic medical record designed specifically for oncology. The result is an integrated management solution that improves overall communication, process efficiency and quality of care. Multi-ACCESS is available in a variety of configurations, including:
  • Multi-Department Multi-ACCESS. Multi-ACCESS is available in both single and multi-department configurations. Multi-department Multi-ACCESS is ideal for multi-department or multi-facility organizations that want to maintain separate schedules and billing records, yet share a common patient database for system-wide patient management and reporting.

  • Multi-ACCESS ASP. Multi-ACCESS is designed to run on a local or wide area network, or it can be operated as an ASP (Application Service Provider). With Multi-ACCESS ASP, the system is maintained at IMPAC’s data center and operated by users via the Internet. Multi-ACCESS ASP users enjoy all the advantages of Multi-ACCESS – full-featured registration, scheduling, charge capture and electronic charting – without having to worry about system maintenance.

  • Multi-ACCESS ESP. Multi-ACCESS ESP (Essential, Secure, Portable) provides the ability to access Multi-ACCESS data – appointments, patients’ charting data, contacts and quality checklist items – via a PDA (Personal Digital Assistant). IMPAC customers can use Microsoft® Outlook® to stay in sync (Portable Multi-ACCESS), or access Multi-ACCESS via the Web using a wireless Internet provider.
